Lucas Equine Equipment offers four types of finish options for your custom-built items:

  • Super Durable Powder Coat Finish Paint
    • Our nine standard colors are offered in this Super Durable Powder Coat finish, which offers a highly weather-resistant and UV-resistant finish. This two-stage process begins with a base coat of zinc-rich primer, followed by a top coat of semi-gloss powder paint, cured to a hard finish by a high-heat oven.

On-site finish painting is popular among customers who have exact color specifications. In addition, it eliminates the concern of paint scratching during shipment or installation.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanize
    • This option is ideal in coastal areas, where the salt air and weather create extreme conditions for painted materials. It is the most durable of the finish options. This finish is very different from powder coating, in that it gives a rougher, more industrial aesthetic. The smooth, seamless, quality finish produced in our other finishes is lost when the equipment is put through the galvanizing process. However, the rust-protection of hot dip galvanizing is significant.

Material Options

To maintain our high quality standards in the horse stalls and barn equipment we build, Lucas Equine Equipment chooses materials that will be both durable and beautiful. We also frequently use unique materials selected by our customers to coordinate with other architectural elements.

Some key materials used in many Lucas Equine Equipment horse stall and barn products are explained below:

  • Cold Rolled Steel
    • This durable type of steel creates an ultra-smooth surface on which to apply a finish. It offers a much more consistent surface than other types of steel. It is frequently used in the crosshatch sections of stalls and gates. This is one element that helps Lucas Equine Equipment create such flawless finishes.
  • Stainless Steel
    • Many of our hardware selections can be chosen in stainless steel. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and very tough. Some stainless steel hardware can be coated with an oil-rubbed or brushed finish.
  • Brass
    • Most hardware and many accessories are available with brass construction. This brass can be polished and/or lacquered to further enhance the appearance or durability.
  • Domestic Hardwoods
    • Yellow pine, Douglas fir, and other traditional types of wood can add a rich, warm look to your stall equipment, doors and gates. Lucas Equine Equipment has a sophisticated in-house wood shop with expert craftsmen who use high quality wood to create our beautiful product.
  • Exotic Hardwoods
    • With a diverse selection of exotic hardwoods from all over the world, Lucas Equine Equipment can incorporate your choice of exotic woods into your stall equipment. Looking for eco-friendly options? You can choose from exotic hardwoods that are renewable and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Wood Fill

Explore durable, horse-safe stall options with wood or wood-alternative infills, ranging from sustainable bamboo to vented slats, paired with a no-nail design that makes maintenance simple and safe.

Sustainable Hardwoods

Truly sustainable hardwoods are FSC-certified. The FSC is the Forestry Stewardship Council, a non-profit group responsible for certifying sustainably harvested wood. The stringent requirements placed on the loggers and forestry management organizations help ensure that forests are managed to meet the "social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of present and future generations." FSC-certified woods can sometimes be more expensive, but offer the peace of mind that the harvesting of the wood was responsibly managed.

Reclaimed Wood

Wood salvaged from old barns, buildings and other locations can create a rich and beautiful look, while still relying on the principle of "reduce, reuse, recycle." Barns, doors and stalls can be built with reclaimed wood from your property or purchased through Lucas Equine Equipment.

Exotic Hardwoods

There are some exotic hardwoods that exhibit properties that make them particularly long-lasting. Many of these options can be selected in FSC-certified options. For example, a recently popular wood ipe (pronounced e-pay) is an extremely dense dark reddish-brown lumber, offering the same fire rating as concrete and steel! This durable hardwood is also rated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Forestry as "very resistant to attack by decay, fungi and termites." Other interesting exotic woods include sapele (an African mahogany) and Brazilian cherry.

Domestic Hardwoods

Domestic hardwoods usually offer the most cost-effective option when it comes to lumber. Many domestic hardwoods can also be easily found in FSC-certified versions. These hardwoods can include oak, Douglas fir, cherry and mahogany.

Softwoods

Softwoods are generally not recommended for use inside horse stalls. Due to the rough and tough nature of the environment inside a horse stall, yellow pine is the only viable option in the softwood category. While yellow pine sacrifices some of the strength found in other hardwoods, it offers a low-cost alternative to hardwoods.

Wood Alternatives

There are several high quality wood alternatives on the market today. Talk to your Lucas Equine sales and design expert about HDPE options and other wood alternatives.

Stalls from Lucas Equine Equipment are designed with a unique U-channel and wedge design that securely holds tongue-and-groove wood slats without dangerous nails or screws. This system is also used for Lucas Equine Equipment wood doors, wood sidewalls, and even wash stalls.
